Today we are tackling the dramatic scenery on both sides of the well known Snake Pass between Ladybower and Glossop. All over waterproofs essential.

Meet: Nr Warslow Village Hall (and toilets)
OS Grid Reference: SK086585

Distance: 6½ miles

Whilst it is a bit of a shame having to suffer the delay of a tea shop stop, sometimes it just has to be done. We pick up a short section of the Manifold Valley Way, the delights of Hoo Brook leading us into Butterton and relatively easy stroll back to the start.

Full Day

Open Access Walk to Saddleworth Moor (with sleepover option)
Date: Sunday 9th May 2010
Meet: Crowden
OS Grid Reference: SK073993
Nearest Postcode: SK13 1HZ
Distance: 12½ miles

For those who've been walking with us for a while this will always be known as "that walk". You'll remember! We start with a conventional route to Black Hill which is in itself a challenge and stunner. Once again we shall then head out across the trackless moor and follow the delightful Holme Clough onto Saddleworth Moor itself. Our route back is equally impressive and despite the height and scenery there is only one major ascent up. This is not however a route for first timers and unfortunately on this occasion also dogs. Our starting point is the Crowden YHA so we are also offerring (without extra charge) a shorter but no less stunning walk on Bleaklow on the Saturday for those thinking of staying over. YHA cost is £21.95 but book now!

Half Day

Riber Castle, High Tor, Matlock Bath & the High Peak Trail
Date: Sunday 16th May 2010
Meet: High Peak Junction Car Park
OS Grid Reference: SK314560
Nearest Postcode: DE4 4GT
Distance: 8 miles

A slightly longer walk than usual for a Half Day but a "fun" walk that we think everyone will enjoy. Delightful woodland paths lead us up to the ruin of Riber Castle looking down on Matlock where we branch down to the bizarre "Kiss Me Quick" environment of Matlock Bath for a tea break (or something stronger). Our walk then passes high above the famous Masson Mill and skirts Cromford to reach the High Peak Trail leading us back to the start.

Full Day

Monyash, Flagg, Chelmorton and Taddington
Date: Sunday 23rd May 2010
Meet: Outside Bulls Head Pub / Café
OS Grid Reference: SK150668
Nearest Postcode: DE45 1JH
Distance: 12½ miles

Having the Bulls Head in delightful Monyash to come back to is an extra incentive on any walk. On this occasion we also manage Horshoe Dale, Deep Dale and some classic Peak District countryside as well as a late pub stop in Taddington. Great walk!

Half Day or Full Day Walk

Abney Moor from Sir William Hill (10 and 20k Walk Challenge)
Date: Sunday 30th May 2010
Meet: Off Sir William Hill Road
OS Grid Reference: SK210777
Nearest Postcode: S32 5QD (Barrell Inn)
Distance: 6 miles + optional further 6 miles

Peak District moorland and scenery at its best. A simple walk in a stunning location that takes us out across the moor to Abney and then returning via Stoke Ford back to the start. Plenty of options for a pub stop at the end of the walk. The optional additional distance is for those interested in building up their credits on the Walk Challenge / Voucher Scheme.

Full Day

Goyt Valley and Combs Edge
Date: Sunday 6th June 2010
Meet: Goyt Valley Car Park (before reservoir)
OS Grid Reference: SK024752
Nearest Postcode: n/a
Distance: 11 miles

Another different walk where we climb out of the Goyt Valley towards the White Hall Outdoor Centre and then onto Combs Edge. This then takes us back via the Combs Reservoir and Fernilee into the woodland alongside the Fernilee Reservoir and back to the start.

Half Day

Millers Dale, Cheedale and Monks Dale
Date: Sunday 13th June 2010
Meet: Millers Dale Old Station Car Park
OS Grid Reference: SK138733
Nearest Postcode: SK17 8SN (nearby Anglers Rest pub)
Distance: 6 miles

This is classic Peak District walking in an area abundant with the vegetation and wildlife you get in the steep sided limestone river valleys and dales which are so characteristic of the area. After the relaxed natural splendour of Millers Dale and Cheedale with the famous stepping stones, we ascend to Wormhill and traverse to descend through the somehow unworldly chill of Monks Dale back down to Millers Dale with welcoming pub.

Full Day

Hallam Moor and Burbage Moor
Date: Sunday 20th June 2010
Meet: Hathersage
OS Grid Reference: SK229815
Nearest Postcode: S32 1DD
Distance: 12 miles

Walks from Hathersage are normally both challenging and rewarding in equal measure and this one is no exception. Combining a steady climb onto the high moorland of Hallam Moor via Stanedge Pole with the environs of the Redmires Reservoirs for our picnic lunch stop and return via Burbage Moor and Carlswark following in part, the tracks of our epic snow walk earlier in the year.

Half Day

Sherwood Pines from Rufford Park
Date: Sunday 27th June 2010
Meet: Sherwood
OS Grid Reference: SK643647
Nearest Postcode: NG22 9DF
Distance: 7½ miles

Not quite the Peak District on this occasion although in the first Elizabethan age, Sherwood stretched as far as what is now the Peak. Our walk combines with those on our massive Center Parcs Party Break for a slightly longer but flatter walk in the delightful forest area around the Sherwood Forest Holiday Village. Lots to explore at Rufford Country Park for later.

Full Day

Kinder Plateau from Edale
Date: Sunday 4th July 2010
Meet: Edale Main Car Park
OS Grid Reference: SK123853
Nearest Postcode: S33 7ZA
Distance: 10½ miles

Yes, you can't avoid a bit of ascent on this walk and we've chosen a different route to previous walks in this fantastic area, so no excuses for not coming. Probable early lunch stop at the 590 trig point or Crookstone Hill if we make the first point too early. Return via Losehill and Hollins Cross so save a bit of energy for the afternoon. No pub stop until we finish on this one.

Notes:

1). Many members take out our ten walks option in which case they pay just £45 for 10 Sunday walks either Full Day or Half Day or a mixture of the two. A series is then pre-booked but walks can be rolled forward as long as FIVE CLEAR WORKING DAYS notice is given as for other Spice cancellations. Please tell us whether you want Full/Half/Mixture, start date and any dates you want excluded when you book.
2). Unless stated otherwise we leave promptly for all of our Sunday Walks at 10:30am and we do not wait for latecomers under any circumstances, nor can we normally provide meet points for later on the walk as the paths we take may be well away from access points.
3). Half Day Walks are typically 5-8 miles in length with normally no more than one steep ascent, Full Day Walks may be up to 12 miles in length or sometimes a little more and may have several steep ascents.
4). It is very important that members come properly dressed and equipped for these walks. Stout footwear with ankle support, proper walking boots for preference, waterproofs (top and bottom for full day walks) and PLEASE no denim jeans which get horribly uncomfortable when wet. Always bring plenty of fluids, sun block and some snacks and / or lunch as whilst many of our walks include a pub stop it is not always possible to guarentee food will be available.
5). If you have any queries or problems with walk locations or other details after our office has closed for the weekend call the Spice mobile on 077 11 166 480 and / or text if unavailable.
