Then onto Long Dale, Gratton Dale and Elton for a potential pub stop at the Duke of York PH. We then pick up the well walked path to Robin Hood's Stride which is a spectacular tor of gritstone rocks perched on a ridge between Harthill Moor and the Alport-Winster road. Nearby there's a renowned local Hermit's Cave and Harthill Moor Farm, which can be seen from the Stride, is built on the site of Castle Ring, an Iron Age fort. This is one of the forts built along the ancient track known as the Portway, which passed just alongside Robin Hood's Stride. We then head back to Middleton via Bradford.

Castleton at Christmas Walk and Meal
Date: Sunday 11th December 2011
Meet: Castleton Tourist Information
OS Grid Reference: SK149829
Nearest Postcode: S33 8WP
Distance: 7.5 miles Start Time: 11:00am

We thought it'd be good to have a slightly longer than usual walk on this last date before Xmas and finish with a pre-booked seasonal meal in one of the excellent local venues. Castletons businesses always make a big effort at Xmas time so it's a great place to find that unusual gift for a loved one (or yourself). Our walk takes in the brilliant Castleton skyline but only one main ascent near the beginning and then you can relax and enjoy. Please let us know if you want to join the meal when you book (£14 set menu).

On the assumption that there is some sort of train and bus service running on Boxing Day you can get to Cromford without the car from Nottingham or Derby. Our walk takes us to high places on both sides of the Derwent Valley with lots of historic associations in this now World Heritage Site location. Oh yes, there are also the mince pies ......

Walking in this area close to the famous Cat and Fiddle pub is always a delight. This time of year the scenery is stark and rugged but very rewarding. Parking in Butterton is always a bit of a nightmare so park where you can and we'll meet up by the Church. There is a tremendous variety of landscapes in this area from the rolling hills near Butterton, low lying moorland to the North and then the more angular craggy hills around the Elkstones. Altogether a fascinating walk with late stop at the Jervis Arms so a snack would be desirable.

Our walk includes Ashford in the Water, Great Shacklow Wood, the mine and of course a return to Bakewell for an other chance to indulge in the famous Bakewell Pudding (not tart-she was murdered(!)).

Full Day

Shutlingsloe from Tegg's Nose

Meet: Teggs Nose Visitor Centre Car Park (P & D)
OS Grid Reference: SJ950731
Nearest Postcode: SK11 0AP
Distance: 13 miles Start Time: 10:30am

This one should be on everyones favourite walk list. This classic walk combines a great diversity of scenery with several impressive viewpoints. Shutlingsloe, the graceful queen of the western moors (also known as the Cheshire "Matterhorn") may be the prime objective yet the walk contrives to reveal a string of lovely and contrasting scenes and tranquil passages away from the tourists at Tegg's Nose. Plenty of ascent and descent and possibly a mile or so over our usual distance. You can do it!
Half Day

Chrome Hill and Parkhouse Hill
Date: Sunday 1st April 2012
Meet: Earl Sterndale
OS Grid Reference: SK090670
Nearest Postcode: SK17 0BU
Distance: 6 miles Start Time: 11:00am

These "sleeping dinosaurs" were out of bounds until access laws changed and still tend to be on routes for full day rather than half day groups but we thought it about time that everyone enjoyed them. We're hoping for some nice weather so bring a picnic to eat on the top of Chrome Hill and don't expect a warm welcome in our Earl Sterndale pub stop when we finish as they are not noted for being especially walker friendly. Never mind.

Notes:

1). Many members take out our ten walks option in which case they pay just £39 for 10 Sunday walks either Full Day or Half Day or a mixture of the two. A series is then pre-booked but walks can be rolled forward as long as SEVEN CLEAR DAYS notice is given as for other Spice cancellations. Please tell us whether you want Full/Half/Mixture, start date and any dates to be excluded when you book. This option is now open to Spice members from all Spice groups.

2). We depart on Half Day Walks promptly at 11:00am to allow for the longer journeys some members are making from the further reaches of the East Midlands. The start time for Full Day Walks remains of necessity at 10:30am to ensure that we don't come back in the dark. Unless stated otherwise we leave promptly at the time stated and we do not wait for latecomers under any circumstances, nor can we normally provide meet points for later on the walk as the paths we take may be well away from access points.

3). Half Day Walks are typically 5-8 miles in length with normally no more than one steep ascent, Full Day Walks may be up to 12 miles in length or sometimes a little more and may have several steep ascents.
4). It is very important that members come properly dressed and equipped for these walks. Stout footwear with ankle support, proper walking boots for preference, waterproofs (ideally both top and bottom) and PLEASE no denim jeans which get horribly uncomfortable when wet. Always bring plenty of fluids, sun block and some snacks and / or lunch as whilst many of our walks include a pub stop it is not always possible to guarentee food will be available.
5). If you have any queries or problems with walk locations or other details after our office has closed for the weekend call the Spice mobile on 077 11 166 480 and / or text if unavailable.
